Thoughts of the artist

HC Bello on Personal Thoughts about his works. Hugo Bello
20 февраля 2007

For an artist it is dificult to talk objectively of his work. I am in constant search for ways to express, with colors and textures, my inner most feelings at the moment I am painting. But I enjoy so much to see how my feelings play against a figurative subject matter, that is why I don’t go completely into abstract form.

In my work, the paint colors and the way is applied changes according to my mood or how enthusiastic or down I am when I am working, the subject matter is just there to be used as fences for what I am expressing, that way I am prevented from leaping to the walls behind the easel.

A lot of people ask me what is my school and I tend to answer, as a polite way to clue them in, that my work is a mixture of “Expresionism” and “Fauvism” (it tends to look that way), but in philosophy my work is more “Futurist” and “Dada”. Futurist because I belive in the movement of light and the departure from anything already done (this might be only pride, because even in small parts of a work everything has been done before). Dada because my work being pure expression thrown in shapes and forms has a great possibility (Chance) that it won’t come out right or appealing, since Chance was one of the maxims of Dada, and yes we have a lot of great Dada work, there is a lot more that didn’t work and was destroyed or painted over (like some of my paintings).

I also have from both movements the sence of fun, that I belive should be present in all art work, so you can enjoy it every time you see it. But the most important thing in my work is that, depending on your mood and the way the light hits the painting at different times of the day, you will see the work slightly changed like if a color is brighter than usual at that moment or that the painting is calmer than when you saw it yesterday, etc.

I hope that history, in the future, will catalogue my work in a movement that is still nameless. Very few of the artists that were catalogued in movements in their times liked their “ism” or believed they belonged to it, but for sure I know only one artist that name his “ism” (Martin Lopez and his “Ultramodernism”).

I leave to you the viewer where and how to catalogue my work till history takes over and give my work and me a resting place in one of the groups of the end of the XX and beginning of the XXI century.

Thank you very much for taking the time to look at my work, hope you enjoyed.
